5Amazing (surprisingly)Oct 31, 2011
By Michael Adam Dermody
I ordered this expecting what I usually expect for anything refurbished: something that has been banged-up and abused and therefore looks like crap. For me, looks are not nearly as important as functionality, which is why I often purchase refurbished items. I was amazed to get this product from Creative and see that it looks brand new! It came with the newest firmware already loaded. It works perfectly. It honestly looks like I could have pulled it off the shelf at any store, opened the package, and there it is. Creative has managed to impress me. Been a while since they did that.

1Broken product and pass the buck serviceMay 02, 2012
By ktspencer
I purchased this product to upgrade a working 8GB model that I had purchased two years ago. I LOVED my old one! It was easy to use, uploaded quickly, and had incredible sound (with the high end headphones that come with the new players).

This one arrived promptly and I was happy with the packaging and included accessories. The headphones were not the high end ones I was used to but this was not a problem for me as I just used the ones I already had from my prior model. The package was a cardboard Creative Labs box. The Sticker on the front listed the model number, included components, and boasted a 90 Day Limited Hardware Warranty. It also stated that it was creative certified refurbished.

I loaded all my music onto the player and put it to work within a couple of hours after opening it. I used it frequently and was pleased with its performance. On day 64, I plugged it in to my computer to recharge it and it failed to dock properly. I had this problem once or twice with the first one and the normal solution was to press the reset. It would re-start and rebuild and then be fine (took about a minute). I did the same thing with the new one. Instead of rebuilding, it loaded to a firmware screen with options for clean up, format, reboot, and one other that I can't remember at the moment. I attempted a clean up.... no result. I tried reboot... no response. I went to Creative toolbox from the software installed on my computer. From there I was led to the website. Troubleshooting led me to ensure my firmware was up to date so I downloaded the latest version (the same as what I had but I wanted to make sure I had a good copy). I tried rebooting it several more times and finally resolved to format the player (UGH).

After formatting, re-installing the firmware, and re-loading all the music (about two and a half hours total), It seemed to be working... for about two songs. Suddenly, it shut down. The battery showed a full charge so I tried to restart and the player went right back to the firmware screen. I ran the clean up and it re-started... for a half a song then it shut down again. I set it aside and began to email Creative Labs support. While I was emailing them, the player turned itself on. It came back up to the firmware screen. I pushed the power button and the device went to the normal start up screen. I shut it off and proceeded with my email.

I told Creative all the steps I had taken to resolve the issue. They emailed me and told me to take all those steps (I don't think they really read the email, they just sent a standard response??) I emailed them again and told them I already had done all that, as I stated in the first email. They responded and said that if I purchased the product from an online store other than theirs they would not honor the warranty and I would need to contact the online seller. I contacted Amazon and they told me it was beyond their 30 day return policy and I would need to contact Creative Labs.

Basically, I spent 75 dollars and both of the companies involved (That have always been great to deal with) are not able (or willing) to resolve the issue because they each pass the problem to the other.

THIS IS NOT A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN.

*** UPDATE *** After several frustrating communications, Creative finally agreed to look at the broken device and repair or replace it at their discretion. I shipped the broken unit to them and was delighted to see they sent a replacement the same day they received my broken one. BUT I just received the replacement and IT IS ALSO NOT WORKING!! I tried to turn it on but it didn't power up. So I assumed it needed charged (I would think they would have done this to make sure it was working before they shipped it). I plugged it in to the USB port, the screen flickered slightly (on the Player), the computer attempted to install drivers, the install failed and the unit never powered on. The computer does not register the device at all.

I have, again, started the long process of communicating with them to get a positive result.

Two Months ago, I would have recommended this company to ANYONE.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN CREATIVE AT THIS POINT.

3Great MP3 player, useless extra control buttonsMar 03, 2012
By Garry Bruckner "Skytrooper"
Great MP3 player, very good sound, menus are easy to navigate, control buttons not well marked, 4 control buttons are useless, buttons could be taller and have tactile marking for easier navigation. I found some small stick on plastic rhinestones of different sizes and stuck them to the control buttons to help locate the desired buttons without having to look. Would have given 5 stars except for the problems with the control buttons.

4A Good Little MP3 Player that now interacts with OVERDRIVE!Jan 30, 2012
By Tansy's Mom
I purchased my refurbished X-Fi player a year ago & remain very happy with it, especially since my public library began offering Overdrive (yes!)--for free audio(and ebook) downloads, for those unfamiliar with Overdrive. I have had no problems with it at all. It did take some diligence initially to become comfortable with how the buttons work. The included instructions were lacking, for my needs anyway, but there are very good tutorials on Creative's website. Also, I greatly value the option of adding storage space with an sd card, but find somewhat tedious the process of moving items to the sd card by computer -- and had to use another website tutorial to learn how to do this, too. (Sounds like the new X-Fi3 ends the tedium, and also has bluetooth wireless--> saving my pennies!)

As another reviewer noted, my refurbished X-Fi came looking brand new, player & packing materials. I don't know what headphones would have come with a new, full-priced X-Fi, but what I received (with "spongy covers" I believe another reviewer complained) are very good... to my hearing. And as for the USB cable being so short (per same reviewer), yes it is, but I find it about perfect to have my X-Fi attached & sitting right beside my computer, supported on whatever is supporting my computer.

I continue recommending this to family & friends. Great MP3 player & good price. Hope this helps.

4Can't really complain, i guess...Oct 15, 2011
By Stuart S. Rich "garcia"
Just received this, and the player seems to be everything I expected it to be. However, I was disappointed by the fact that the earbuds that were included were NOT the ones that come with the player originally, but extremely cheap, foam covered ones. Luckily I won't really need to use them, but it was still a bummer, as I was expecting the nice ones that are supposed to come with this player. Also the usb cord is only an inch long. So unless you want to hold the player in the air the entire time its connected to your pc, you'll need to make some kind of platform to rest it on, otherwise the weight of the player will pull the usb out. Luckily, the cord from the coby player this is replacing works on it, so that problem was solved. Overall, I'm still happy with the purchase, I just wish I had known it was going to arrive with such crappy accessories, so i could've bought replacements when I originally ordered. If I had been planning on actually using the earbuds, or didn't have another usb cord already, I would've been really pissed...so I wanted to let anyone else considering this to know what to expect, since I didn't. :)
