Just plug in, forget the "software" in Windows 7 ;(Oct 02, 2012
By James L. Drury
"BattleEdge"
I tried to update the software after installing by the included cd, it broke the install. I hunted every creative line of code after installation and removed and tried to re-install. 3/4 of the software would not install. I looked some more didn't find any new stuff to remove. I re-installed. I got 4 String not found. I removed it again. I tried re-installing and individually selecting upgrades and restarting after each one. Still I received string not found. I think the install failed because it was already registered with creative. I removed everything and after 4 days of trying I settled for the audio control center and volume control and left out the rest.
I can only assume that the software is extremely buggy on windows 7 for updating. I will never try to upgrade it again. I currently have the product working and will leave it that way.
This item will work with only plug and play and no software only drivers. I would suggest if you really really need the software to use the installation cd and never update the programs - only the firmware and drivers.

Windows 7 drivers are rubbishFeb 19, 2012
By Qwertinsky This device was perfect in Windows XP. But in Windows 7 it sounds like crap. Constant popping and clicking. Obviously a driver issue and seemingly Creative Labs is just going to drop it instead of fix it. Do not buy this if you are running Windows 7.

It does the job.Apr 22, 2012
By Ant Diggy It is nice i just put it on a laptop that is just under the minimum requirements and getting a slight freeze. Wish it was a lil more compatible on older systems.

Great, wide soundstage, great priceFeb 13, 2012
By Number2 This review works for both the refurbished and new version of the Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro. I bought the refurbished version because it was considerably cheaper.
The built-in audio of my computer went out so I first bought just a cheap plug-and-pluy USB sound card. But when playing any game or any movie with decent sound, it just sounded flat. I've got a pair of Sennheiser PC360's that have fantastic sound reproduction and great microphone quality so that wasn't giving me the sound I wanted. After installing the X-Fi, I immediately noticed the difference. Movies and games were fantastic, especially on a great pair of headphones like the Sennheiser PC360's or RS180's. I played THX and DTS sample audio files side-by-side and it was amazing how much better these sound than both the built-in audio did and the generic plug-and-play USB sound card did. You could hear the placement of each sound on the sound stage. You could hear deep bass and crisp highs and mids.
The adapter has a volume level on the top, which is handy. That just passes the volume up/down commands to Windows which sets the main windows volume level up/down.
All in all I really enjoyed this sound card as a nice dolby/thx/surround capable audio adapter.
price is very good!Apr 20, 2013
